Strategy

Shang Tsung is known for his vampirism and huge power generation. His Fatal Blow was fixed from his original one so now he has his own Fatal Blow attack. He would be best to be paired with MK11 Jade and MK11 Rain because Jade provides DOT reverse and Rain provides 400% recovery for MK11 teammates. His brutality along with Klassic Reptile's can be obtained from Sorcerer’s Tower.

Please note that battles are highly situational: this section only mentions cards that have mechanics that, for any reason, are particularly effective with/against, or particularly ineffective against Shang Tsung. Having a card that "counters" Shang Tsung does not mean it is always a good choice.

• MK11 Characters.
• Baraka/Scourge: Baraka will gain an extra hit on his combo ender thanks to Shang Tsung.
• Kitana/Mournful, Ermac/Master of Souls, Wrath Hammer & Bloody Tomahawk: Shang Tsung gains 1 Bar of Power for each of these supports. Because he is an Outworld character, he can help Ermac start the match with X-Ray while also teamed up with Kitana.
• Kitana/Day of the Dead: If an opponent resurrects or gets knocked out, Shang Tsung will receive Regen from Kitana.
• Kotal Kahn/Sun God & Reptile/Nimble: Shang Tsung gains 30% Attack from Kotal Kahn and 30% Health from Reptile.
• Reptile/Klassic: Shang Tsung gains immunity to poison and without healing from opponent knockout or his Soul Steal ever getting suppressed, and gains increased critical hit chance against poisoned opponents.
• Shao Kahn/Konqueror: Whenever Shang Tsung tags-in, Shao Kahn has a 40% chance to assist Shang Tsung on the

Good Against

• Kung Jin/Bojutsu, Kenshi/Ronin, Kintaro/Shokan Warrior, Jax Briggs/Klassic & Noob Saibot/MK11: Shang Tsung will render their passive abilities useless with his unblockable Soul Steal. Plus, when Noob Saibot summons his shadow, he could easily heal Shang Tsung's health back up if he dies.
• Kotal Kahn/Dark Lord & Kitana/Circle of Shadow: Same as Noob Saibot with an Osh-Tekk warrior or stolen opponent.

Countered By

• Poison and Incurability debuffs: These effects prevent any type of healing.
• Cassie Cage/Undercover, Kitana/Ronin, Katana & Champion's Nunchaku equipments: The character and equipment pieces deal extra damage to Outworld class opponents including Shang Tsung.
• Jacqui Briggs/Kosplay (Rain & Sub-Zero): Rain Jacqui deals extra basic damage and Sub-Zero Jacqui deals extra critical damage against Outworld characters including Shang Tsung.
• Jacqui Briggs/Cybernetic: Jacqui takes less damage from Outworld class opponents including Shang Tsung.
